4 Ways to Give December Birthdays the Love They Deserve

There’s something special about the holiday season- snowflakes gently falling from the sky, festive decorations, twinkly lights on houses, delicious food, fun music, and gatherings with family and friends. If you have a special person in your life who has a birthday during the holiday season, it can add to the list of celebrations.
However, in the rush of the holidays, our family and friends with December birthdays can often get second-class treatment. Whether it is a gift card hastily purchased instead of a thoughtful birthday gift, Christmas wrapping paper instead of a lovely birthday gift bag, or the dreaded "...this is your birthday and Christmas present…," our winter friends are put on the back burner during the hustle and bustle of the season.
So, in the spirit of showing those we love how much they mean to us, let's make a goal to make the December birthdays extra special this year. Need some help figuring out how to make those birthdays stand out? We have a few ideas!
Idea #1: Stay away from Christmas wrapping paper and colors.
Julia Child said, "You eat with your eyes first." When you hand your treasured friends or family their birthday gift, use pretty birthday wrapping paper in non-Christmas colors. I don't know about you, but when I am handed a gift that someone has gone out of their way to make look special, it makes me feel special. Choose a fun birthday gift bag or giant ribbon bow in their favorite color, and they will know that you spent time thinking about them.
Idea #2: Get them a non-holiday related gift, and for goodness' sake, don't combine the Christmas and birthday presents into one gift.
Holiday birthday babies are used to getting one gift to cover two events - their birthday and Christmas. Although family and friends will not put up a fuss when you casually remark that the green and gold box you hand over is a "...birthday and Christmas present..." they will feel like they aren't a priority. Of course, that's not your intention, so make sure to get them a separate birthday and Christmas gift, and don't give them the gifts at the same gathering (see Idea #3).
Idea #3: Celebrate with a birthday party like you would any other time of year.
What are birthday traditions with family and friends? Do you always fill the birthday person's room with balloons while they're sleeping, go to a favorite hibachi restaurant, or sing happy birthday backwards? Make sure you do that with the holiday birthdays in your life too. It's easy to think that all the holiday festivities count towards birthdays as well, but remember that a birthday celebration should highlight the amazing person whose day you're celebrating, not be grouped in with everything else you're doing during the holidays.
Idea #4: Get them a special and thoughtful birthday dessert.
Birthday cake is so 2008. One last idea to make the birthday gal or guy feel special is a customized dessert. With all of the Christmas cookies and candies around, it easy to think they don’t need a sweet of their own, but that’s why giving them a birthday dessert means so much more.
Nikkolette’s can make macarons in practically every imaginable flavor and color. Peanut butter macarons with a special message? No problem. Pink Champagne or Blueberry Cheesecake macarons? We gotcha. Want to spell out the birthday person’s name with a different letter on each macaron? We can do that here in our Minneapolis macaron kitchen. Personalized gifts are an easy way to honor the birthday guy or gal while also showering them with all the birthday attention they deserve, so give them macarons! Plus, macarons are naturally gluten free.
